My Hand

As a child growing up I was always very aware of my hands.
They were hard and dry as an old mans.
Not soft and warm like those of my peers.

...
But today I am proud of my hands. The leather like hide protects me, my fingers are strong and serve me well.

My hands are the hands of an artist, a sculptor, a musician.

I have grown into my hands and they fit very well,

Stands four feet high.
Carved from Ash.

Dream Stick

I spent Christmas 2010 alone.
It Wasn't A bad alone and it was of my choosing.

I began aimlessly carving Odin's face
into this piece of wood,
then leaves, a skull, a door, a snake, a sword, a book a dragon.......

Over the next few weeks I added more and more details.

Now there are 2 thresholds. The first, the door to the subconscious is locked. The second leads to the higher self.

In between there are dreams

This is my Dream Stick.

Three feet high.
Carved from Rhododendron.

 BORN BAD

Born Bad

For those who never stood a chance.
Children born into war.
Bad seeds born from twisted roots.

For innocent, sinless suffering.
Twisted broken beginnings.
Burning in beastial fire.

For the offspring of wicked hearts.
Scarred by the sins of their guardians.
Hidden from the gaze of salvation.

For those who have never known love.
Whose hands were never held,
and whose hearts were ever empty.

6'6" Tall and carved from ash.

Awakening

I've been playing with rotten wood which has been treated so as to kill the rot and solidify the timber.

Decaying timber has always interested me on woodland walks.
This is my first attempt at reclamation and, I must say, I am very pleased with the result.
The center was hollowed out by the rot and the grain pattern and texture has become strange indeed.

I call this piece 'Awakening'.
The figure is tearing itself from its surroundings,
reaching up and coming to life.

It reflects the changes in my perception of reality that were occurring at the time.

SsnakeS

This woven snake is carved from a piece of Sycamore I  found by the River Medway.

It sat in my garden for over a year until I was inspired by a short film about ancient artifacts.

This snake doesn't symbolize eternity, more like...confusion.

It is carved from Sycamore

and measures 11" across

     SIREN

The Siren were mythological creatures accused of  using their beautiful voices to entice unwary sailors to their deaths as the ships crashed upon the rocks.

Still Life

 Inspiration?

I'm the father of three grown boys
and I live very close to Chatham.

What more inspiration do I need!

18 " tall.
Carved from Oak.

Vessel

The face is but many masks

It crawls on the world, its wings unformed.

It is both masculine and feminine, thinker and warrior.

It doesn't understand the power in its hands.

It is empty, awaiting a spirit to fulfill
its promise.

Anything is possible.

4'8" Tall
 carved from ash.

Earth Spirit

I am not a person.
I am a spiritual being.
I always have been.
I always will be.
Forever and ever.
I am.

4'0" Tall.
Carved from English Oak
and set with semi precious
stones.

  Twizard

As his spell is cast, the wizard
flickers between this world and the next. His mortal body is drawn into the unknown.

12" Tall
Carved from Yew.

   Solstice Bowl.

Made during and to commemorate the
2011 summer solstice.

The colours are bright and sunny
and the crack patterns are just
so powerful.

Carved from Eucalyptus.

2' 1" at widest point
10 inches high.

 Life's a breeze.

I carved this tired little chap
from a building block using a
4" wood screw as a file/chisel.

So if you fancy giving carving a try,
this method is almost free!
